Two blinked her eyeforms open in the darkness, focusing. It was still very early, only two o’clock in the morning. Why had she woken up? It was a while before she could recall the nightmare that threw her from her previously peaceful sleep. She shook her head at the thought, trying to push it out of her mind. It stuck in her thought processors like rotten taffy.
After a minute of hiding under the sheets, she turned over to face Nos-4-a2. He was sleeping soundly, soft clicks and whirrs emanating from his inner workings to fill the silence of the hour. She didn’t want to wake him, b
“...Why so glum, little one?”
The robed EVE probe turned a few degrees towards Nos-4-a2’s voice. He had snuck up on her, which was usually hard to do with her acute sensory system.
“Sorry. I was just lost in thought,” she replied. When she turned to face him, the long swathes of fabric she wore danced around her frame. The rich blues and violets, all accented with silver, were dull in comparison to her lively sapphire eyeforms, even though they were somewhat obstructed by a parted semi-transparent veil. Her eyeforms were especially bright against the warm colors of the sunset outsi
His optic opened.
The room was dim, the sun’s warming rays almost unable to penetrate the thick curtains that covered the windows, just managing to cast a soft, red glow. The early morning silence pressed down about the couple with a comfortable weight; not even the birds had awoken. It all felt perfect in his hazy mind: coolness caressed his body from every angle, buried deep within the cocoon of silky sheets with her own small form curled into his chest. He found that his arms were still draped around the other being’s sleeping frame and he smiled, nestling his forehead down against hers.
His hand slowly lifted itself, hoverin

“What... on Earth... is this?” Nos-4-a2 uttered. Before him was his workplace in a state he’d never seen before. Every drawer was pulled open. Contents disturbed, disorganized, displaced. Copper wires pulled from their neat coils, tangled beyond repair, twisted about tools and chair legs and battery cases. Bottles of solutions that could have easily melted the metal he was made of lay haphazardly outside of their cabinets. The clasp that held the door over the heavy-duty solar power outlets had been pried open and applied to an ultraviolet lamp. The light was pointed at a bizarre tank filled with brownish-green sludge, a tra
Waking up was a slow process for Nos and Two. After a night’s cycle without consuming energy, the Vampire was about as eager to get up as he was to eat vegetables. Two was used to being refreshed from a night of recharging, but because of her recent change in species, drowsy morning snuggling was impossible to resist.
Nos would always wake up first by his inner low-battery warning. It wasn’t so much of an alarm as a reminder, but he found it pointless all the same. He would tune it out and gradually come online, scarlet optics giving off a pulsating light until they fixed into a dim glow. His night vision would perfectly shape hi
Settling into bed is one of the most wonderful parts of my day now that I’m stuck home. Nos pulls back the sheets and lets me lie down before getting in next to me and snapping at the lights to turn off. He folds his arms around me, pulling me fully into a warm embrace.
But, for some reason, tonight is different. Nos-4-a2 snaps for the lights off before he pulls the sheets down on the bed. His hands guide me to my resting place and he crouches down to reach for something under the bed.
“Nos... What are you doing?” I query.
“I picked up a little something for you today. I couldn’t help thinking of you when I sa

I set my bag down on the floor, smiling at the sight of Eve curled up in bed. The dim crystal-light from the hearth and the moonbeams leaking in from between the curtains reflect off her creamy metal, her sleeping form giving off a dreamy glow. I slip out of my heavy cloak and hang it on the the closet door, hovering as quietly as I can to join her.
As I pull back the sheets, I can’t help laughing. That sweet little robot... she hasn’t touched this side of the bed since I left. What was that, three days ago? The fabric is still neatly pressed, not a wrinkle in sight. The silky sheets fold atop each other as Eve turns over.
“Eve to the front desk, please?” a familiar multi-toned voice called Two’s attention. She looked over her shoulder in surprise to see her mate standing nonchalantly by a display of saplings. It was 6:30 PM and the only customers left were being tended to by other employees.
“Nos! You’re here!” she trilled, “What are you doing so early?”
Nos extended his hand to his wife with a warm smile, “I was in town looking for a pretty little probe to take home, and you caught my eye.”
“...You’re so cheesy,” she giggled, taking his hand.
“And sweet?” he added.
